NORTH AMERICA, especially Canada and America where amount of sunlight gets reduced in winters, can be the cause of vitamin D deficiency in black skinned people. Major source of vitamin D is ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays of sunlight, which is responsible for synthesis of vitamin D in our skin. This synthesis is directly linked with the pigment level of our skin. Black skinned individuals like Indians and Africans have more pigment than white skinned European. Therefore, the rate of synthesis is low in Indians and Africans.
